Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre

Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre, established in Yirrkala in 1975, is a non-profit incorporated association owned and controlled by the Yolŋu people of north-east Arnhem Land. Yirrkala, the hub for more than 20 homeland communities, has historically been the crucible for political, artistic, musical and philosophical resistance to colonisation and is the birthplace of the national land rights struggle.

Within the centre, Yirrkala Arts represents 300 practising artists who create bark paintings, woven works in natural fibres, larrakitj (memorial poles), yidaki (didgeridoos), wooden sculptures, digital art and more. Since 1994, artists from the centre have won 39 major national art prizes and numerous film and music awards. The centre also operates Yirrkala Print Space, which since 1995 has produced more than 900 editions of linocuts, etchings and screenprints. The Mulka Project is a digital archive and production studio within the centre.
