Pilbili
12 Sep 2015 – 10 Jan 2016
Pilbili is a collaboration between Hampstead Primary School, Carclew and TARNANTHI | Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art. Students aged between 8 and 12 years have the unique opportunity to explore Ngarrindjeri culture and art practices through the sophisticated works of renowned weaver Yvonne Koolmatrie.
In the lead-up to TARNANTHI, Ngarrindjeri Elder Uncle Major Sumner led a series of workshops exploring Ngarrindjeri art, culture and heritage. The students experienced first hand the specialist weaving techniques while building an understanding of its practical use of fishing and gathering food.
The young students’ thoughts and perspectives have been translated to an audio guide for visitors to experience as part of Riverland: Yvonne Koolmatrie.
Pilbili is presented by the Art Gallery of South Australia, Carclew and Hampstead Gardens Primary School.
