Baden Pailthorpe

Baden Pailthorpe is part of a generation of artists whose practice is shaped by Internet culture. In Alt-right Arabesque, Pailthorpe continues his interest in the performing digital body with a new focus on the aesthetics of the resurgent and re-branded fascism (the so-called Alt-right). A variety of surreal political imagery, visual references and cinematic techniques (long associated with fascism and propaganda) are combined in this animation to create a strange and intense response to what the artist has described as the ‘overwhelming weirdness of 2016’.

Pailthorpe was the inaugural artist in residence at the Australian War Memorial in 2013. He has been awarded several residencies including a recent Asialink/Australia Council residency with the renowned Japanese digital art collective teamLab and the Cité Inernationale des Arts, Paris, where he developed a performance work for the Centre Pompidou in 2014. His exhibition opportunities include Sappers & Shrapnel: contemporary art and the art of the trenchesat the Art Gallery of South Australia and Rencontres Internationales at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Baden’s work is held in private and public collections nationally and internationally.
