Feature-length and shot on Betacam, Medeamaterial captures Malani’s theatrical production of German dramatist Heiner Müller’s Despoiled Shore/Medea Material/Landscape with Argonauts at the Max Mueller Bhavan in Bombay (now Mumbai). As central performer and collaborator, celebrated Indian actress Alaknanda Samarth moves like a spectre to deliver a powerful soliloquy, amid Malani’s scenographic environment of wall paintings, neon sculpture, slide projections and video projections. The documentary was written and directed by Nalini Malani.
