Moving-image works and animations demonstrate the constant, restless innovation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and art centres.
In recent years Aboriginal artists and filmmakers have created a series of off-beat short films and animations in their homelands and communities. Nearly all of the moving-image works in this selection premiered at Tarnanthi, the Art Gallery of South Australia’s annual festival of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. Their screening together as part of the Adelaide Film Festival presents a rare opportunity for viewers to see a dimension of First Nations creativity that is sometimes poignant, often light-hearted and always entertaining.
The featured works include the unmissable short film Never Stop Riding – billed by the Montreal First Peoples Festival as ‘the only Aboriginal Spaghetti Western ever shot’ – which was created by artists from Iwantja Arts in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. Also from Iwantja Arts and the brush of artist Kaylene Whiskey is Kungka Kuṉpu, a celebration of pop culture that includes animated characters such as Aboriginal Wonder Woman and music icons Dolly Parton, Cher and Tina Turner.
