Join a local poet or artist for a suite of spoken word performances amidst the exhibition.

Alongside painting and drawing, Czech-born artists Dušan and Voitre Marek were interested in poetry as a revolutionary artform. For two Sundays in July, join our artist-led Surrealist Sundays with a series of performances and poetry readings set amongst the works of Dušan and Voitre Marek: Surrealists at sea. Each Sunday showcases leading South Australian artists and poets, with reflections on cultural memory, language, surrealism and the enduring power of poetry in the twenty-first century.

Presenting Artists

Jill Jones – Poetry performance

Join award-winning poet, Jill Jones on a poetic voyage to the strange shores of surrealism as she performs new poems in the exhibition Dušan and Voitre Marek: Surrealists at Sea.

Jenna Pippett – Performance

Na zdraví (To your health)
"A nip of Becherovka will settle your stomach!"
In this roving performance Jenna Pippett leans into hospitality, culture and language to explore the belief that certain bodies of water have 'health properties'. Na zdraví (To your health) takes its cue from the Marek brothers' Czech motherland and its title from Dušan’s 1946 dry point etching made in Prague, the city in which Pippett’s own mother was born.

Mark Niehus

Adelaide poet and artist, Mark Niehus will present a selection of poems inspired by the surrealist technique of automatic writing.

Dominic Guerrera – Poetry Performance

Poet, podcaster and Aboriginal health educator, Dominic Guerrera will perform a poem written by his grandmother Margaret Brusnahan, followed by a new poem penned in response to her poem. Of Ngarrindjeri, Kaurna and Italian heritage, Guerrera will draw specifically upon Ngarrindjeri life in the Coorong, a place of inspiration for Dušan Marek during the 1960’s.
