First Nation Art in the Collection
New in 2025
What is Aboriginal Art and Torres Islander Art?
Sometimes people can have preconceived ideas of what defines Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, but put simply - it is art made by a First Nations person. In addition, works of art made by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists can be about anything and be made with any material. In this workshop students will explore the diversity of First Nations art in the collection by taking a tour and participating in a hands-on workshop with one of our trained facilitators. Students will identify key themes in artists' works and create a work of art that responds to these ideas and connects to their own world.
Please note:
Students will not be re-creating works of art by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Facilitators delivering the session may not be First Nations and as such will not be delivering culturally significant content, skills or techniques. Instead, this workshop has been designed using AGSA's recommendations and activities included in our publication Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in the Classroom and our online resources. AGSA Education consult with artists and our curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art when designing education resources. At AGSA we believe that it is everybody's responsibility to educate young people about the significance of First Nations history and culture - works of art can be the ideal platform for us to all learn together.
