Hear from our curators as they take you through the exhibition Radical Textiles, an exhibition that celebrates the cutting-edge innovations, enduring traditions and bodies of shared knowledge that have been folded into fabric and cloth over the past 150 years.

Followed by the tour you will hear from Kay Lawrence about the making of the Women’s Suffrage Centenary Community Tapestries, how they were commissioned, designed, and woven in public so the people of South Australia could participate in their making and engage with the ideas they represent.

Lawrence will also lead a workshop on making string. String making is one of the earliest human technologies and thread is fundamental to all textile construction. While various technologies have evolved to spin thread from fibre Lawrence will show participants a very simple way of making string using your hands and dried plant material or discarded fabric.

Ticket price include entry to Radical Textiles.

Materials to bring:

- Long, thin pliable leaves that can be wound around your finger twice without breaking are usually suitable. Leaves from the following plants are suitable, (cut green and dried in the shade), Red hot poker leaves, Watsonia leaves, Iris leaves.

- Lightweight pliable fabric, plain or patterned. We encourage you to bring fabric that can be cut from old clothing or picked up at op-shops and cut into strips – perhaps fabric that was otherwise destined for landfill.
