Brent Harris: Surrender and Catch Educator Briefing and Workshop
Saturday 6 July, 2024
$150, $130 TRT, Department for Education teachers and AGSA members
Join artist Brent Harris and Maria Zagala, Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs for a tour of Brent Harris: Surrender and Catch. Moving between figuration and abstraction, Harris deploys both humour and the grotesque to examine psychological subject matter and visualise his complex and contradictory feelings. Indeed, the exhibition title refers to Harris’ interest in sociologist Kurt H. Wolff’s notion of ‘surrender and catch’ as a process for self-analysis and as a method of working.
Following the exhibition tour and morning tea, celebrate making in the moment with artist and educator Luke Thurgate. This workshop will respond to various aspects of Brent Harris’s studio practice. Participants will explore a range of process based drawing exercises which utilise chance and play to move between representation and abstraction. We invite you to bring a small non-valuable object from home to share as the starting point for the workshop. These will be used as a prompt for storytelling and as subject matter for our initial exercises.
Lunch and morning tea provided.
