Threads of Power: Embroidering My Inner Superpower

Year 5 students at Immanuel Primary School have been on an exciting creative journey, celebrating their unique strengths through embroidery and symbolism. Inspired by Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding and Mirarr artist Ray Mudjandi, students explored the idea that we all have a superpower that is part of our identity.

Students started by designing several symbols based on words that describe them, removing the vowels to create unique and meaningful designs. After choosing their favourite, students traced their design onto hessian and outlined it using a hot glue gun to create a raised effect. Once the glue dried, students embroidered over the glue with coloured yarn, bringing the symbols to life with texture and vibrant colour.

This project helped students reflect on their inner strengths while learning new techniques like embroidery and using fibres creatively. Through their work, students showed persistence, thoughtful design, and pride in celebrating who they are.

Just like the superheroes in Ray Mudjandi’s work, we all have something special within us.
