Year 1 and 2 Sculptures - West Lakes Shore School
Kukatja/Wangkatjung artist Rover Thomas was born at Well 33 (Gunawaggi or Kunawarritji) on the Canning Stock Route in the Great Sandy Desert. He was raised by two fathers, Lanikan Thomas and Sundown, both Wangkatjunga men. His mother, a Kukatja woman, was called Ngakuyipa or Nita. His paintings such as The Story of Owl (Dumbiny) and Paruku have been said to echo his desert origins.
Year 1 and 2 students made their own owl sculptures inspired by The Story of Owl (Dumbiny) by Rover Thomas which is in AGSA's permanent collection. Students also looked at owls native to Australia to create their owl shapes using salt dough. After the sculptures were baked in the oven, students painted them using water colour paints.
