  • WALL LABEL: Hans Heysen: The Creative Journey, 1992

This unfinished work reveals Heysen’s method of beginning his oil paintings.  The canvas has a light pencil grid on it, which assisted him to draw the outlines of the forms in pencil.  Then the tones were layed in using brown oil paint diluted with mineral turpentine.  In its unfinished state it has the fresh, bold feeling of a wash drawing.
