Thomas Hirschhorn is recognised for his expansive works that critique and transform traditional gallery spaces and interiors as he tackles issues of critical theory, global politics and consumerism. His DIY aesthetic and his use of cheap everyday materials
is a means to abolish or question codified cultural hierarchies.Twin-subjecter belongs to a body of work in which ‘the subjecter’ is a protagonist of Hirschhorn’s invention. The double figures reference the everyday shop mannequin, but when violently pierced with nails and screws they begin to challenge the traditions of the artist’s model and the muse that dominate Western art discourse. This disarming double act is Hirschhorn’s stand-in for exploring issues of consumerism, politics, propaganda and aesthetics.
