WALL LABEL: Hans Heysen: The Creative Journey, 1992
The Toilers was the climax of Heysen’s series of men and horses working the land and it won him his fourth Wynne Prize in 1920. In this scene bathed in autumn light, he has portrayed a moment of calm and relative inactivity, and has reduced the composition to its essentials.
