WALL LABEL: Hans Heysen: The Creative Journey, 1992
From about 1918 to 1920 Heysen created a series of works dealing with men and animals toiling in the fields. His finished compositions were developed from many quickly drawn sketches made outdoors. In this sheet a faint borderline has been drawn around one image, which became the basis for his etching The plough, 1918. The etching in turn was the basis for his large charcoal drawing, Turning the plough, 1920.
