WALL LABEL: Martin Luther and his wife, 1700 - 1800
This humble portrait miniature represents one of the most important figures in religion, society and culture in the sixteenth century. Martin Luther was at the fulcrum of the Reformation, which swept through Europe during the sixteenth century. With no decoration or artistic flourishes, this portrait directs our attention to the sitters: the artist has made the intimate relationship between Martin Luther, who is clothed in austere dress, and his wife the focus of the composition.
