WALL LABEL: A Beautiful Line: Italian prints from Mantegna to Piranesi, 2012
This is exactly Michelangelo’s picture which is in the Vatican. Giulio Bonasone of Bologna took it down in black chalk and engraved it in copper.
So proclaims Giulio Bonasone in the margin of this engraving after Michelangelo’s fresco of the Last Judgement. The monumental painting, completed by Michelangelo on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel, was unveiled in 1541. The highly anticipated event created an immediate market for engravings of the work, bringing Michelangelo’s invention to cultural centres throughout Italy and the rest of Europe.
