WALL LABEL: A Beautiful Line: Italian prints from Mantegna to Piranesi, 2012
It is not clear whether the spirited pen and wash sketch of Glaucus and Scylla was intended as a study for the print or the painted version of this composition. Although it was usual for artists to make a print (or have one made by a professional engraver) after a painting, it appears that Rosa worked in the reverse. The free, exploratory quality of the sketch suggests it belongs early in the preparatory process, and therefore was made when Rosa started work on the etching.
