WALL LABEL: Hans Heysen: The Creative Journey, 1992
The subject of naked youths amongst saplings is rare in Heysen’s work. It is reminiscent of some of Corot’s paintings of bathers and partly recalls the work of Australian Art-nouveau artist Sydney Long. It may have been part of a search by Heysen for new subject matter and lead to his series of turkeys amongst saplings which he began around 1914.
