WALL LABEL: Hans Heysen: The Creative Journey, 1992
Heysen made this small painting rapidly during a single session in the studio, and so it has the fresh direct paint quality of an oil sketch. He had intended it to be a study for a larger painting which never eventuated. It records a dramatic moment Heysen came across during the last week of January 1912, with drovers and sheep fleeing from the many bushfires burning throughout the Adelaide Hills.
