BIOGRAPHY
Born into a large family in Le Havre, a coastal city in northern France, Dufy studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre before winning a scholarship to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1900, where he studied alongside many other artists who were to also become artistic luminaries, Georges Braque being one of them. He followed in the footsteps of his trail-blazing predecessors, the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, before adopting his distinctive fauvist style. Later in his career Dufy also became a well-known illustrator and designer, producing posters and book illustrations, as well as designs for fabric for the French couturier Paul Poiret.
