BIOGRAPHY
Born in the English seaside town of Scarborough, England, Frederic Leighton undertook his artistic training in Europe, firstly, in Frankfurt and then later in Florence. From 1855 Leighton lived in Paris, mixing with an established group of painters, including Eugène Delacroix, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Camille Corot. In 1860 Leighton settled permanently in London, where he began to associate with members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and later became President of the Royal Academy, at the time the pre-eminent art institution in Britain. Leighton was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1878 and in 1896 was given a peerage – the shortest peerage in British history, as Leighton died the following day.
