Join us on North Terrace to celebrate the opening of John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new. This first major Australian survey of John Mawurndjul's work assembles more than 160 paintings and sculptures from collections worldwide. Mawurndjul is celebrated internationally for his innovative bark paintings and the radiance of their meticulous rarrk – cross-hatching.

Official proceedings include a Kaurna Welcome to Country; opening speeches by guest speakers Tjulapi Carroll, Director of Ku Arts and member of the Tarnanthi Cultural Advisory Committee, Lee-Ann Tjunypa Buckskin, Chair of the Tarnanthi Cultural Advisory Committee and Deputy Chair of the Australia Council for the Arts, Laura Tyler, Asset President of BHP Olympic Dam, and esteemed curator, writer and member of the Tarnanthi Cultural Advisory Committee, Hetti Perkins.

The opening ceremonies also include a performance by Ripple Effect Band from Maningrida, central Arnhem Land.

John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new is presented by the Art Gallery of South Australia through Tarnanthi in association with Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and Maningrida Arts & Culture.
